Press Announcement from Disability
Bowls England
January 2019.
Disability
Bowls
England appointed their
first Volunteer County
Coordinator to cover the Sussex area.
The late Phil Armstrong,
based at the Peacehaven &
Telscombe Bowls Club,
accepted this exciting & challenging role with Disability Bowls England to promote
bowls for people with disability in the Sussex area. Phil worked hard along with other
officials at the club to promote and develop
opportunities for players with any disability or impairment to join the
sport
of bowls. The club achieved
Sport
England’s Clubmark and Bowls
Disability Mark status
to confirm it has the facilities and policies
needed to run a successful, proactive, & inclusive club.
The Club has also
been awarded Runners-Up
for Bowls
England Club of the Year 2018 after
being Regional finalists in 2017.
Bob Henstridge, also a member at the Peacehaven Club, was appointed an Ambassador for Disability Bowls
England and along with
other
Ambassadors in the region will help develop
strong links with
players and clubs in the Sussex
area. Interested clubs,
people, groups and
partners can get in touch with:-

Fantastic News:
Phil promoted our great Club
again.
Not content with winning the South
East area award in 2017 he steered us into Second Place in the National Ranks
in 2018.
So we are Runners-Up for the Bowls England Club of
the Year 2018 Award
sponsored
by Drakes Pride.
Our congratulations go to Ilminster Bowls Club in Somerset, worthy winners.

On Wednesday the 16th
May 2018 we made our return visit to the Chelsea Royal Hospital at the invitation of
the Chelsea
Pensioners Bowls Club. Our coach driver found
a quick and easy route and we were there with an hour to spare.
The
weather was fine, cloudy and with a biting north wind. Not quite what
we had hoped for in mid-May but it wasn't raining. We soon found our way
to the nearby clubroom and bar where we settled to a warm (or not)
drink and snack. At 2.00 pm we were served with tea, coffee and
biscuits outside the small pavilion which is liberally decorated with
pictures and banners presented by visiting bowls clubs from around the
world, several near to our own including Rottingdean and Crouch. The
match commenced at 2.30 with a break for high tea at 4.00 pm in the
imposing dining room where the walls are lined with portraits and
photos of past royals and dedications to the regiments represented by
the Pensioners and their past wartime experiences. Here is where they
take breakfast and lunch every day. You cannot fail to be
impressed. After tea we battled on to a conclusion
which resulted in an unprecedented
win for
the Chelsea Pensioners. Back
to the bar for chats, drinks and speeches before we departed at 6.30
pm, all having had a very enjoyable afternoon. They are a friendly and
fun group and a pleasure to be with. Fortunately the result is
unimportant.
The following are a few snaps to mark
the event.
Assortment
of Bowlers, all well
wrapped
up.
Tea in the sumptuous dining hall. Great hospitality.
Captains

It's all action on the green.

The

small but
interesting.
Especially inside, with many Sussex clubs
represented.

In October 2017 Bowls England announced the winners of the
2017 Drakes Pride Club of the Year Award.
Peacehaven and Telscombe B. C.
won
the
Regional Award.
Essentially
this means we came third in the country.
Thanks
to the hard work of Phil
Armstrong who was determined to get our great club recognized.
Now
to win the BIG
one.
If you have read the above you will now know that we missed it by a
hair's breadth.
But in this case we'll take second best Club in England with pride.

Bob Henstridge receiving his England Cap

Bob has now made several appearances
for Disabled Bowls England.
Congratulations
Bob.

Thanks to Ladies Captain Carole
Alder for the very colourful picture below.
And to Men's Captain Mike Gould
for the inspiration.
Who says bowls is
boring? Certainly not those members who enjoyed the
Captain's Day
Celebration on the 26th August 2017.

Sport England
Lottery Award of £9,754
Once again Fortune has smiled on us.
Our application for
funds to purchase bowling equipment for the
disabled has been approved.
With the completion of the access route,
to the new disabled toilet
facility we are
fully equipped to enable those who require a wheelchair to participate
fully in our sport.
The award has also enabled us to purchase a second Short Mat and
Bowling Arms.
We are equally grateful to the House Project
Centre whose generous donation
of £2,200 combined with the above award has enabled us to
provide two fully motorised wheelchairs for use on the green. And once again they have come to our
assistance with a grant of £3,500
to provide funding for the wheelchair access route to the back of the
pavilion. The disabled toilet
facility within our pavilion is now complete thanks to the unstinting efforts of
Ray
Hillman,
Peter Herman, Ron Walsh and chairman Ted Giles.
Their
dedication to helping us make our club one of the best has also enabled
us to complete these works on time and within
the budget of £1,500
provided by the
Bruce Wake Charitable Trust.

On Thursday 15th
September 2016 we were visited by a Bowls England
representative team to mark
the completion of our Pavilion Extension
and our Viewing Terrace.
As usual the sun shone on a
memorable event enjoyed by all who were lucky enough to be there. The
end result was a narrow win by just three shots for the BE Squad
led by
2016 BE President Michael Jennings.
We are
indebted to Ross Clifton
of Bexhill BC for his help in organising this event.

On
Wednesday 18th May 2016 we welcomed the Sussex County
Executive
who came to sample the delights of our spacious pavilion
and excellent bowling green.
The rain cleared and the sun shone on us as we all enjoyed a
light hearted but competitive match, followed by a sumptuous dinner.
The pictures below convey something of the relaxed enjoyment shared by
all.
Sussex County Bowls President
Terry Mitchell
With Leslie Funnell, Linda Powell and Jill Matthews, Cooks
Supreme.
All happy and looking forward to dinner. For the record the Executive
won 117 to 114.
County Chairman Ken Woodcock made sure of victory, taking Top
Rink prize.

On Wednesday
15th April 2015
we were honoured by the visit of
HRH Prince Richard,
the Duke of Gloucester
who came to Peacehaven to officially open our beautiful Big Park.
Three members of our Management team were among those invited to attend
his welcome
by Peacehaven Town Council. The sun shone on the warmest day of the
year to date.
Our Council Organiser Deborah Donovan
can be justly proud of a job well done.
HRH, intrigued by the prospect of
a legless Sussex Martlett, suggests most bowlers are frequently similar.
We denied it, of course.
Treasurer Pat signs the Visitors Book on behalf of our Club.
Chairman (and husband) Ted and secretary Frank make sure
she does it right.

The then
new Mayor of Peacehaven, Cllr. Robbie
Robertson, visited us on
Wednesday 14th May 2014
accompanied
by a delegation from the
Lady Boys of
Bangkok performing in Brighton.
A fun day was enjoyed by all who attended.
The event finished with the English tradition of Tea and Biscuits by
the Green.
Getting
ready for action.
Just
a happy group of wanabe bowlers.
